Weird.  I've seen two of these acts live (God Machine/Yo La Tengo), but agree they never got the recognition they deserve.

For me, the most under-rated band of all time were Shudder To Think.  On Dischord with so many other artists, and had the pleasure of being one of few bands to have Jeff Buckley sing on one of their tracks.  Awesome band, but never really took off.  Shame really.

I'll toss my vote in for pavement. A friend had me listen to shady lane and it was love from first chorus.
The test of music is, I suppose, whether we ourselves live more intensely for the hearing of it

I'm always surprised that Elbow haven't had the same success as other mopey mainstream indie bands like Coldplay or Snow Patrol. They get lumped in with those bands a lot, but I think they're not quite as accessible. A lot more creative though and with more personality - Guy Garvey is a great front man. Also, the Verve should've trumped Oasis in the 90s. I also agree that Yo La Tengo are great, just in case anyone thought that I'm obsessed with English Britpop/indie bands of the 90s.
